Setting up a league
The league settings field by field — and what can still be changed when.
The settings of a league live under League settings and are split into seven areas: general, scoring, members, teams, invites, schedule and calendar. They are the league management's to change; everybody else sees them, so that it is clear what is being played by.
General
League. Name and image. The name is what your fellow players recognise the league by; the image stands in the league switcher and above the table.
Line-up. Four numbers almost everything else follows from:
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Teams | How many teams play in the league |
| Players per team | How many players of a team bowl at the same time |
| Games per match day | How many games each of them bowls on a match day |
| Rounds | How often every team meets every other one |
"Teams" is a hard limit and not a statement of intent: once the number is reached, no further team can be created. Whoever needs one more raises the number here first.
Match day time. Start, duration and venue. The start is in the time of the alley, not in the reader's. A calendar entry needs the duration to have an end; while nothing is set, bowlinq suggests one, worked out from players and games. The venue is a single line of free text, name and address together — exactly as it will later appear in every calendar entry.
Seasons. The previous and the following season, where they exist. Neither is made here but by renewing a season: Season & archive.
Scoring
These rules are locked as soon as the first match day is confirmed.
Handicap
The handicap evens out differences between averages. Three fields:
- Benchmark — the average everyone is brought up to.
- Percentage — how much of the difference is credited.
- Cap — no more handicap than this, even when the calculation says otherwise. Without a cap the calculation stands as it is.
The formula and a worked example are on Points & standings.
Ghost
When somebody does not show up and a position stays free, the ghost bowls it: a fixed score the league sets. That score is a final result including handicap — nothing is added to it. It counts towards no average, neither the player's nor the team's.
With the ghost switched off an unfilled position stays empty: 0 pins, and the duel is lost.
Points
Four scorings, each with its own value. A scoring worth 0 points does not happen.
| Scoring | What is played |
|---|---|
| Points per game | Position against the same position, per game |
| Points per team game | Team against team, per game |
| Points per series | Position against position, all games together |
| Points per total score | Team against team, all pins of the evening |
Pick one of the three presets in the create dialog — team game only, everything counts, singles only — or set the values yourself. Even numbers are a good idea: a tie splits, and only then are there no half points. Details on Points & standings.
Confirmation
Who has to sign a result off before it counts in the table:
| Mode | Who confirms |
|---|---|
| No confirmation | Nobody — a complete result counts at once |
| One person per team | Anybody who bowls for the team; one phone goes round the lanes |
| Both captains | The captain of each side |
| League management | The league management alone |
The league management may confirm in every mode. What a confirmation freezes and how it is taken back is on The match day.
Calendar
Every team has a file to subscribe to. It is rewritten on every change to the schedule, the teams and the league data; Regenerate calendars writes them all once more, in case one is lagging behind. The subscription links stay the same. How to subscribe is on Schedule.
Danger zone
Hand the league over. Another member becomes the owner; you stay on as a co-leader. Only somebody with an account of their own can take it.
Delete the league. Teams, members, invitations, schedule and every result bowled go with it. That hits every member, not only you, and cannot be undone.
What can still be changed when
| State | Scoring rules | Teams, members, schedule | Results |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preparation | yes | yes | yes |
| Active | no | yes | yes |
| Completed | no | no | no |
| Archived | no | no | no |
A completed season can be reopened at any time, and out of preparation everything is free. The way there is on Season & archive.
